One may know the 700 verses of the Bhagavad Gita by heart, but trust Me, the time that was spent in learning by rote and reciting it, is all a waste, if one does not resolutely act upon even a single verse. It is not the resolution that matters; it is resoluteness. Resolution is just a string of words. In fact, that learning might even be a handicap as that skill can affect the head and make one swell with pride. The price of sugarcane is fixed according to the sugar content in it. You evaluate oranges in proportion to the juice they contain, is it not? So too, one is worthy of honour in proportion to the knowledge of the Self acquired. This knowledge alone can confer steadiness, strength and real happiness.

ஒருவருக்கு பகவத் கீதையின் 700 ஸ்லோகங்களும் மனப்பாடமாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் அவற்றில் ஒரு ஸ்லோகத்தையும் கூட உறுதியுடன் பின்பற்றவில்லை என்றால் அதனைக் மனப்பாடம் செய்து, பாராயணம் செய்கின்ற அனைத்து நேரமும் வீணே. உறுதி பூணுவது முக்கியமல்ல. ஆனால் உறுதியுடன் இருப்பதே முக்கியம். உறுதி என்பது வார்த்தைகளின் ஒரு கோர்வை மட்டுமல்ல. பார்க்கப் போனால், அந்தப் பாடம் தலையைப் பாதித்து ஒருவரை அகந்தையில் ஆட வைக்கும் ஒரு ஊனமாகக் கூட ஆகலாம். ஒரு கரும்பின் விலை அதனிலுள்ள சர்க்கரையின் அளவைக் கொண்டு தான் நிர்ணயிக்கப்படுகிறது. ஆரஞ்சுப் பழங்கள் கூட அவற்றிலுள்ள சாற்றின் அளவின்படி தான் மதிப்பிடப்படுகின்றன அல்லவா? அதே போல, ஒருவர் தன்னைப் பற்றிய ஞானத்தை எவ்வளவு கொண்டுள்ளாரோ அதனைக் கொண்டுதான் அவர் மதிக்கப்படுகிறார். இந்த ஞானம் மட்டுமே நிதானத்தையும், பலத்தையும், உண்மையான சந்தோஷத்தையும் நல்கும்.

Each heart is a Dharmakshethra (a warfield of righteousness), where there is a constant battle between the forces of good and evil. Why, the whole world is a Dharmakshethra. Hence it is very essential that every single child and mother, each and every one of you be devoted to Dharma (righteousness). The holy Bhagavad Gita begins with the word, ‘Dharmakshethrae’ and in the final chapter appears the phrase “Sarva Dharman Parithyajya”, meaning ‘give up all Dharma’. The significance of this is that through Dharma, you have to transcend Dharma. What is needed is the steadfast practice of righteousness. Scholarship and wealth are often burdens, they are indeed a handicap. Practice alone counts in spiritual matters.

ஒவ்வொரு இதயமும் நல்ல மற்றும் தீய சக்திகளினிடையே இடையறாது போர் நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு தர்மக்ஷேத்ரம் தான். ஏன், இந்த உலகம் முழுதுமே ஒரு தர்மக்ஷேத்ரம் தான். ஆகையால், ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தையும், ஒவ்வொரு அன்னையும், உங்களில் ஒவ்வொருவரும் தர்மத்திற்குப் பணிந்திருப்பது மிகவும் அத்தியாவசியமானது. புனிதமான பகவத் கீதை, “தர்மக்ஷேத்ரே” என்ற சொல்லில் துவங்கி, கடைசி அத்தியாயத்தில், “சர்வ தர்மான் பரித்யஜ்ய” என்ற “அனைத்து தர்மங்களையும் விட்டுவிடுங்கள்” என்கிற பொருளுடன் கூடிய ஸ்லோகத்தைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. இதன் உள்ளர்த்தம் என்னவென்றால், தர்மத்தின் மூலமே நீங்கள் தர்மத்தைத் தாண்ட முடியும் என்பதாகும். தர்மத்தை விடாது கடைப்பிடிப்பதே தேவைப்படுகிறது. பாண்டித்தியமும், செல்வமும் பொதுவாகச் சுமைகளே. அது மட்டுமல்ல, அவை ஊனங்களும் கூட. பயிற்சி மட்டுமே ஆன்மீக விஷயங்களில் முக்கியமானதாகும்.
