A true devotee will have no eye on the profit of any kind that can be derived from their service. If you quarrel with your spouse and desist from food for a day, that does not count as fasting in the book of God. Also praising one God as great and decrying another is incorrect. Any of these acts reflect the fact that you are unaware of the elementary rules of spiritual discipline. Dhana (wealth) is the currency of the world. Sadhana (Spiritual Practice) is the currency of the spirit. Be an example to others through your conduct – sweet speech, humility, reverence to elders and steadfastness in truth and faith. This way you will influence more people into practicing spirituality; it is better than establishing societies, collecting donations or running temples. The Lord looks for sincerity, simplicity and steady joy in the contemplation of His Name and Form.

The greatest obstacle in the path of surrender is egoism (ahamkaram) and Attachment or Possessiveness (mamakaram). This is ingrained in your personality since ages and its tentacles go deeper and deeper with the experience of every succeeding life. It can be removed only by the twin detergents of discrimination and renunciation. Devotion is the water to wash away this dirt of ages, and the soap of japam, dhyaanam and yoga (repetition of God’s name, meditation and communion) will help to remove it quicker and more effectively. Slow and steady progress will surely win the race in this one; quicker means of travel can spell disaster. Proceed step by step in your spiritual practices – placing one steady step before you take the next. Do not waver or slide back two paces with one step forward. Cultivate deep faith – that will make your progress steady!

There are three types of devotion: The Vihanga method, where like a bird swooping down upon the ripe fruit on the tree, the devotee is too impatient and by the very impatience one exhibits, loses the fruit, which falls from one’s hold. The Markata method is akin to a monkey which grabs one fruit and then chooses another and tugs at that, giving way to unsteadiness as it is unable to decide which fruit it wants. So too, the devotee of this type hesitates and changes the goal much too often and thus loses all chances of success. The third and ideal type is the Pipeelika method, where like the ant, which slowly but steadily proceeds towards the sweetness, the devotee also moves directly, with undivided attention towards the Lord and wins His Grace.

பக்தி மூன்று வகைப்படும்: விஹங்க முறை – ஒரு பறவை எவ்வாறு ஒரு மரத்திலுள்ள பழுத்த பழத்திற்காக கீழ் நோக்கிப் பாய்கிறதோ, அவ்வாறே பக்தனும் மிகவும் பொறுமையற்று, அந்தப் பொறுமையின்மையாலேயே அந்தப் பழத்தை நழுவவிடுகிறான். மர்கட முறை – எவ்வாறு ஒரு குரங்கானது ஒரு பழத்தை கையில் எடுத்ததும் மற்றொரு பழத்திற்காக இதனை விட்டுவிடுகிறதோ, அவ்வாறே நிதானமற்று, எந்தப் பழம் வேண்டும் என்பதை முடிவு செய்ய முடியாமல் இருக்கிறதோ, அவ்வாறே இந்த விதமான பக்தனும் தயக்கத்துடன் தன் குறிக்கோளை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் மாற்றிக்கொண்டு வெற்றிக்கான அனைத்து வாய்ப்புகளையும் இழக்கிறான். மூன்றாவதான, உயர்வான முறை பிப்பீலக முறையாகும். இம்முறையில், ஒரு எரும்பு எவ்வாறு மெதுவாக ஆனால் நிதானமாக இனிமையை நோக்கிச் செல்கிறதோ, அவ்வாறே பக்தனும் கடவுளை நோக்கி நேராக, கவனம் சிதறாமல் சென்று அவருடைய அருளைப் பெறுகிறான்.

The Lord is a Mountain of Love. Any number of ants carrying away particles of sweetness cannot exhaust His plenty. He is an Ocean of Mercy without a limiting shore. And devotion is the easiest way to win His Grace and also to realize that He pervades everything; in fact, He is everything! Sharanagathi (total surrender) or leaving everything to His Will, is the highest form of devotion. Devotion and the attitude of surrender, which is its final fruit, will give you great courage to meet any emergency; such courage is what is called Renunciation. When Devotion is just emerging as a sapling, a fence is needed to protect the tender plant. That fence is religion and its rules, restrictions, directions and commands.

கடவுள் அன்பின் சிகரம் ஆவார். எவ்வளவு எறும்புகள் அதன் இனிப்புத் துகள்களை எடுத்துச் சென்றாலும் அவருடைய நிறைவு என்றும் குன்றுவதில்லை. எல்லையற்ற கருணைக் கடவுள் அவர். பக்தியே அவருடைய அருளைப் பெறுவதற்கும், அவர் அனைத்திலும் ஊடுருவியிருக்கிறார் என்றும், அவரே அனைத்தும் என்றும் உணர்வதற்கும் எளிதான வழியாகும்! பூரண சரணாகதி அல்லது அவருடைய சங்கல்பத்திடம் அனைத்தையும் விட்டுவிடுவது என்பதே பக்தியின் மிக உயர்ந்த நிலை ஆகும். பக்தியும், அதன் கடைசிப் பலனான சரணாகதியும் உங்களுக்கு எந்த ஒரு கஷ்டத்தையும் சந்திக்கும் தைரியத்தை அளிக்கும். அப்படிப்பட்ட தைரியமே வைராக்கியம் ஆகும். பக்தி சிறு செடியாகத் துளிர்விடும் போது, அதனைப் பாதுகாப்பதற்கு ஒரு வேலி தேவைப்படுகிறது. அந்த வேலியே மதம், அதன் சட்ட திட்டங்கள், கட்டுப்பாடுகள் மற்றும் அதன் ஆணைகள் ஆகும்.

Take the ups and downs of life as natural. They are incidental to the world of compounds and components. When an empty plantain leaf is kept, it tends to move up in the wind and fly. But, when you serve dishes on it, the food and the leaf will remain unshaken. So too, fill your mind and heart with the virtues of faith, steady discipline, devotion, detachment and equanimity – these are items of the spiritual menu. Then you will not sink with every blow. When you have attained true wisdom, you will find that good fortune should not be gloated over, nor bad fortune grieved over. A hero treats both with equal unconcern. Pain and Gain are breezes and storms that cannot affect the depths of the ocean of bliss in the heart of a true devotee.

Every being needs love, every being inhales and exhales Love. Love is the very breath of life; each and every one of you are embodiments of Love. Love knows no fear, and so, love needs no falsehood to support it. It is only fear, that makes people warp the face of truth, to make it pleasant for those whom they fear. Love seeks no reward, love is its own reward. Even a small trace of greed for gain (vishaya vasana) degrades love into a bargain over the counter. Love removes all egoism; the self is transcended, forgotten and superseded when there is love. When such pure Love is directed towards the Lord, it is called Bhakthi (Devotion).

ஒவ்வொரு ஜீவனுக்கும் அன்பு தேவைப்படுகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு ஜீவனும் அன்பையே மூச்சாக சுவாசிக்கின்றது. அன்பு உயிர் மூச்சாகும்; உங்களில் ஒவ்வொருவரும் அன்பின் வடிவங்களே. அன்பு பயமறியாது. ஆகையால், அன்பு பொய்யைச் சார்ந்திருப்பதில்லை. பயம் தான், தாம் கண்டு அஞ்சுபவர்களுக்கு இனிமையாக இருப்பதற்காக, உண்மையை மறைக்கிறது. அன்பு எதனையும் எதிர்பார்க்காது, அன்பே அதன் பரிசாகும். இலாபம் என்ற ஒரு சின்ன பேராசையின் சுவடு அன்பில் தென்பட்டாலும் அது அன்பை வியாபாரம் ஆக்கிவிடும். அன்பு அனைத்து அகந்தையையும் நீக்குகிறது. அன்பு, நான் எனும் உணர்வை கடக்க வைத்து , மறக்க வைத்து , அதற்கப்பால் இட்டுச் செல்கிறது. அப்படிப்பட்ட புனிதமான அன்பு கடவுளின் பால் செலுத்தப்பட்டால் அதுவே பக்தி ஆகிறது.

God will not be attracted by learning, wealth or material possessions. God is drawn only by devotion. Take to Him, any troubles you have – He will accept all of them and fill you with joy. God loves every devotee. He accepts you for who you are. He is aware of all the difficult situations, trials and tribulations you go through and your devotion to Him, which gives you so much happiness. However, this devotion alone is not enough. What is needed is the regulation of that Divine Love, in the form of virtue and service. Do not criticise others, rather criticize yourself. Have the Name of the Lord on your tongue and the Form of the Lord before your eye. If you shape yourself this way, the place where you live will be the holiest of all. Let all your activities be directed only towards this purification in your hearts. I bless each and every one of you with success, in this noble effort!

கடவுள் படிப்பினாலும், செல்வத்தினாலும், பொருட்களினாலும் ஈர்க்கப்படுவதில்லை. கடவுள் பக்தியால் மட்டுமே ஈர்க்கப்படுகிறார். அவரை நாடுங்கள். அவர் உங்களுடைய துயரங்கள் அனைத்தையும் உங்களிடமிருந்து வாங்கிக் கொண்டு உங்களை ஆனந்தத்தால் நிறைப்பார். கடவுள் ஒவ்வொரு பக்தனையும் நேசிக்கிறார். நீங்கள் எவ்வாறு உள்ளீர்களோ அவ்வாறே உங்களை ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறார். நீங்கள் அனுபவிக்கும் அனைத்து கஷ்டமான சூழ்நிலைகளையும், துயரங்களையும், வருத்தங்களையும், உங்களுக்கு ஆனந்தமளிக்கும் அவர் மேல் நீங்கள் கொண்டுள்ள அன்பையும் அவர் நன்கறிவார். ஆனால், இந்த பக்தி மட்டுமே போதாது. அந்த தெய்வீகப் பிரேமை நற்குணமாகவும், சேவையாகவும் மாற்றப்பட வேண்டும். பிறரை விமர்சிக்காதீர்கள். மாறாக உங்களையே விமர்சித்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். உங்கள் நாவின் மேல் ஆண்டவனுடைய திருநாமத்தையும், உங்கள் கண் முன்னே அவரது திருவுருவத்தையும் வைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். நீங்கள் உங்களை இவ்வாறாக மாற்றிக்கொண்டால், நீங்கள் வாழுமிடம் அனைத்திலும் புனிதமாக மாறிவிடும். உங்கள் அனைத்துச் செயல்களும் உங்கள் இதயங்களைத் தூய்மைப்படுத்துவதற்காக இருக்கட்டும். இந்த உயர்ந்த முயற்சியில் வெற்றி பெற உங்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் நான் ஆசீர்வதிக்கிறேன்.

The body is a house, given to you for rent. The owner is God. Live there, so long as He wills, thanking Him for it, and paying Him the rent of Faith and Devotion. A strong will is the best tonic you can intake; the will becomes strong when you know that you are a child of immortality or a person who has earned the Grace of the Lord. In the epic Mahabharatha, the Pandavas are wonderful shining examples of faith and devotion. They won the Grace of the Lord and successfully defeated every single one of the wily strategy of their foes. The reinforcement of Grace from the Lord is the most reliable means of support. When you win the Grace of Lord, dishonour, defeat and despair fade away like fog evaporates before the Sun. Even disease cannot touch you. Hence, I advise you to face life by strengthening your spiritual urges and invoking the Grace of the Lord.

If you want to light a lamp, you need four things – a container, oil, a wick and a match box. If any one of these is lacking, you cannot light the lamp. Similarly, to light the lamp of spiritual wisdom in your heart, you need – the container of detachment, wick of one-pointed concentration, matchstick of wisdom and the oil of devotion. Of these, the spirit of detachment (vairagya) is crucial. Detachment means absence of body attachment. The sense of possessiveness (mamakara) and the ego-feeling are the causes of this raga (disease). Eradicate this disease of attachment through the process of self-enquiry. When you realise the impermanence of the body and all the sensory experiences, you will naturally acquire detachment (vairagya). Discharge all your duties as an offering to God and treat your body solely as a God-given instrument for the purpose of serving others.

நீங்கள் ஒரு விளக்கை ஏற்ற விரும்பினால் உங்களுக்கு நான்கு பொருட்கள் தேவைப்படுகின்றன – ஒரு கொள்கலன் (அகல்), எண்ணெய், ஒரு திரி மற்றும் ஒரு தீப்பெட்டி. இவற்றில் ஏதாவதொன்று இல்லையெனினும் உங்களால் விளக்கை ஏற்ற இயலாது. அது போல, ஆன்மீக ஞானம் எனும் விளக்கை உங்கள் இதயத்தில் ஏற்றுவதற்கு, பற்றின்மை எனும் கொள்கலனும், ஒருமுகச் சிந்தனை எனும் திரியும், ஞானம் எனும் தீக்குச்சியும், பக்தி எனும் எண்ணெய்யும் உங்களுக்குத் தேவைப்படுகின்றன. இவற்றில், பற்றின்மை எனும் உணர்வு (வைராக்கியம்) மிகவும் அத்தியாவசியமானதாகும். பற்றின்மை என்றால் உடல் மேல் பற்று கொள்ளாமல் இருப்பது என்று பொருள். மமகாரம் மற்றும் அஹங்காரம் தான் இராகம் எனப்படும் நோய்க்குக் காரணமாகின்றன.சுய விசாரணை மூலம் இந்த நோயினைப் போக்குங்கள். இவ்வுடல் மற்றும் அனைத்துப் புலன் சார்ந்த அனுபவங்கள் ஆகியவற்றின் நிலையற்ற தன்மையை நீங்கள் உணர்ந்தால், நீங்கள் இயல்பாகவே பற்றின்மை (வைராக்கியம்) பெறுவீர்கள். உங்கள் அனைத்துக் கடமைகளையும் கடவுளுக்கு அர்ப்பணிப்பாகச் செய்து, பிறருக்குச் சேவை செய்யும் பொருட்டு, ஒரு கருவியாக உங்கள் உடலைக் கடவுள் அளித்துள்ளார் என்று கருதுங்கள்.
