The root of education fulfills itself in the fruit of virtue. Earning a fat salary is not the chief thing one should expect from education. The goal should be the cultivation of virtues. Education is the root of the tree of life. The affection which the individual develops towards kith and kin, the objects of the world, the ideals and the goals, the fancies and fashions – these form the branches and twigs. The blossoms which the tree produces are the intelligence and its manifestations. These flower blossoms yield the fruit of joy (anandam). The sweetness this fruit confers is character. The essence of character is virtue. It is in virtue that the tree of life justifies itself.

கல்வியின் வேர் நற்குணம் எனும் பழமாக நிறைவடைகிறது. கல்வியினால் அதிகமான சம்பளம் பெறுவதையே முக்கியப் பொருளாக கொள்ளக்கூடாது. நற்குணங்களைப் வளர்ப்பதே குறிக்கோளாக இருக்க வேண்டும். கல்வி என்பது வாழ்க்கை எனும் மரத்தின் வேராக உள்ளது. ஒரு தனி மனிதன் உற்றார் உறவினருடனும், உலகப் பொருட்கள் மீதும், இலட்சியங்கள் மற்றும் குறிக்கோள்கள் மீதும், ஆடம்பரங்கள் மற்றும் நாகரீகங்கள் மீதும் ஒருவர் கொள்ளும் பாசமானது அம்மரத்தின் கிளைகள் மற்றும் குச்சிகள் ஆகும். புத்தி மற்றும் அதன் படைப்புகளே அந்த மரம் உருவாக்கும் மலர்கள் ஆகும். இந்தப் பூக்கள் ஆனந்தம் எனும் பழத்தை நல்குகின்றன. இந்தப் பழம் அளிக்கும் இனிமையே நன்னடத்தையாகும். நன்னடத்தையின் சாரம் நற்குணமே. அந்த நற்குணம் மட்டுமே வாழ்க்கை எனும் மரத்தை பூரணப்படுத்துகிறது.

The Bhagavad Gita recommends that you bring any of these – leaf, flower, fruit or water (pathram, pushpam, phalam and thoyam) when you come to the Lord; that when going to the presence of elders and saints, one should not go empty handed. But the Lord does not want any of these. When you demand a thing, you must be prepared to pay a price, equal to its value. If you are seeking the Divine, offer something divine. Love, Peace, Righteousness and Truth are Divine. Bring Me these or any one of these and I shall most gladly accept the gift. Do not offer the Lord mere flowers that fade, fruits that rot, leaves that dry or water that evaporates.

கடவுளிடம் வருகையில் இலையோ, மலரோ, பழமோ அல்லது நீரோ (பத்ரம், புஷ்பம், பலம், தோயம்) கொண்டு வருமாறு பகவத் கீதை பரிந்துரைக்கிறது. பெரியோர்கள் மற்றும் முனிவர்களிடம் செல்கையில் ஒருவர் வெறுங்கையுடன் செல்லக் கூடாது என்றும் உரைக்கிறது. ஆனால், ஆண்டவன் இவற்றை விரும்புவதில்லை. நீங்கள் ஒரு பொருளைப் பெற விழையும்பொழுது, அதற்கு நிகரான விலையைச் செலுத்தத் தயாராக இருக்க வேண்டும். நீங்கள் தெய்வீகத்தை நாடினால், தெய்வீகமான ஏதோவொன்றை காணிக்கையாக்குங்கள். பிரேமை, சாந்தி, தர்மம் மற்றும் சத்யம் ஆகியவை தெயவீகமானவை. இவையனைத்தையுமோ அல்லது இவற்றில் ஏதாவதொன்றோ என்னிடத்தில் எடுத்து வாருங்கள். நான் மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் அந்த அன்பளிப்பை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வேன். கடவுளுக்கு வாடிவிடும் மலர்கள், அழுகிவிடும் பழங்கள், காய்ந்துவிடும் இலைகள் அல்லது ஆவியைப் போகும் நீர் ஆகிவற்றை மட்டுமே கடவுளுக்குக் காணிக்கையாக்காதீர்கள்.
