The mariner uses his compass to guide him aright amidst the dark storm clouds and raging waves. When a person is overwhelmed by the dark clouds of despair and the raging confusion of irrepressible desires, he too, has a compass which will point to him the direction he has to take. That compass is a society that is dedicated to the propagation of spiritual discipline. So long as man is attracted by outer nature, he cannot escape the blows of joy and grief, of profit and loss, of happiness and misery. But, if he is attracted by the Glory of God within him as well as within Nature, he can be above and beyond these dualities and in perfect peace.

இருண்ட புயல் மேகங்களிலும், சீரும் அலைகளிலும் தனக்கு வழிகாட்டுவதற்கு, கப்பலோட்டி தனது திசைக்காட்டியை உபயோகிக்கிறான். ஒரு மனிதன் மனக்கசப்பின் இருண்ட மேகங்களால் வாடும் போது, அவனிடமும் அவன் செல்ல வேண்டிய திசையைக் காட்டும் ஒரு திசைக்காட்டி உள்ளது. ஆன்மீகக் கட்டுப்பாடுகளை பிரசாரம் செய்வதற்காக அர்ப்பணித்துக் கொண்ட சமுதாயம் தான் அந்த திசைக்காட்டி. மனிதன் வெளிப்புற இயற்கையை நோக்கி ஈர்க்கப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் வரை, அவன் சுகம்-துக்கம், இலாபம்-நஷ்டம் மற்றும் மகிழ்ச்சி-துயரம் ஆகியவற்றின் அடிகளிடமிருந்து தப்ப முடியாது. ஆனால், அவன் தன்னுள் உள்ள தெய்வத்தின் பாலும், உள்ளுறையும் இயற்கையின் பாலும் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டால், இந்த இருமைகளுக்கு அப்பால் கடந்து, நிறைவான அமைதியில் இருக்க முடியும்.
