One should not strive for physical strength and happiness alone. One should strive hard for the control of the mind. One who becomes a slave to one’s mind is bound to become weak, however powerful one may be. So, you should make the mind your slave.

The most important reason for bondage is giving too much freedom to the mind. For example, when an animal is tethered to a post, it will not be able to go to another place. It will not be able to show anger or violence or do harm to any person. But if it is let loose, then it can roam over various fields, destroy the crops, and cause loss and harm to others. It may also get beaten up for the harm caused by it. So too, if you turn your mind towards worldly objects, it will descend to the animal or even demonic nature. The same mind also can make you rise from the level of the human to the highest level of Divinity. Hence regulate your mind by following certain rules of discipline. In doing so, you will not go astray and can maintain a good name and lead a happy and useful life.

பற்றுதல் ஏற்படுவதற்கான மிக முக்கிய காரணம் மனதிற்கு அளவுக்கு அதிகமான சுதந்திரம் அளிப்பது தான். உதாரணத்திற்கு, ஒரு கம்பத்தில் ஒரு மிருகம் கட்டப்பட்டிருக்கும் போது, அது மற்றோர் இடத்திற்குச் செல்ல இயலாது. அதனால் யாரையும் கோபித்துக் கொள்ளவோ, இம்சைபடுத்தவோ, அல்லது யாருக்கும் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கவோ முடியாது. ஆனால், அதனை அவிழ்த்துவிட்டால், அது வயல் அனைத்திலும் சுற்றி, பயிர்களை நாசம் செய்து, மற்றவர்களுக்கு நஷ்டமும் தீங்கும் அளிக்கும். அது விளைவித்தத் தீங்கினால் தானும் அடி வாங்கிக் கொள்ள நேரிடும். அதே போல, உங்கள் மனதை உலக விஷயங்களின் பால் நீங்கள் திருப்பினால், அது மிருக இயல்பிற்கு, ஏன் இராக்ஷஸ இயல்பிற்குக் கூட கீழிறங்க நேரிடும். அதே மனம் உங்களை மனித நிலையிலிருந்து தெய்வ நிலைக்கு உயர்த்தவும் முடியும். ஆகையால், உங்கள் மனதைச் சில கட்டுப்பாட்டு விதிமுறைகள் கொண்டு சீர்படுத்துங்கள். அவ்வாறு செய்வதனால், நீங்கள் அங்குமிங்கும் திரியாமல், நற்பெயரை விலகாமல் பார்த்துக் கொண்டு, சந்தோஷமான, உபயோகமான வாழ்க்கை வாழ முடியும்.

The scriptures point out the means of securing everlasting joy, but people are drawn to earn shadowy joys and fleeting pleasures that are fraught with evil and harm. They are trying to draw water with a pot full of holes. The senses leak out the joy they draw. The senses are wild untutored servants who dictate terms to their master – the mind. The mind has to be brought under your grip. Then the servants will fawn at your feet. The mind is the monarch; the senses are the soldiers; the soldiers are now ruling the king, because he lends his ears to them and not the intellect, who is the Prime Minister. Let your intellect take charge. The light of the Sun (your Soul) is obstructed by the thick clouds of desire for sense objects and objective pleasure. Let the strong wind of repentance and resolution scatter the clouds, so that the Aatma may shine forth brilliantly.

புனித நூல்கள் நிலையான மகிழ்ச்சியைப் பெறுவதற்கான உபாயங்களை சுட்டிக் காட்டுகின்றன. ஆனால், மக்களோ தீங்கு விளைவிக்கக் கூடிய பொய்யான, நிலையில்லாத இன்பங்கள் பால் ஈர்க்கப்படுகின்றனர். அவர்கள் ஓட்டைகள் நிறைய உள்ள பானையில் நீர் இறைக்க முற்படுகிறார்கள். புலன்கள் அவர்கள் பெரும் இன்பத்தை வீணடிக்கின்றன. புலன்கள் பயிற்சியளிக்கப்படாத முரடான வேலையாட்கள் போல தம் எஜமானரான மனதிற்கே ஆணையிடுகின்றன. மனது உங்கள் வசமாக்கப்பட்டால் வேலையாட்கள் உங்கள் கால்களில் விழுவார்கள். மனமே அரசன்; புலன்களே போர் வீரர்கள்; போர் வீரர்கள் இப்பொழுது அரசனை ஆளுகின்றனர், ஏனெனில் தன் காதுகளை பிரதம மந்திரியான புத்தியிடம் திருப்பாமல், அவர்கள் பால் திருப்புகிறான். உங்கள் புத்தி பொறுப்பேற்றுக் கொள்ளட்டும். சூரியனான ஆன்ம ஒளி, அடர்ந்த மேகங்களான புலன் சார்ந்த பொருட்கள் மற்றும் புலனின்பத்தினால் மறைக்கப்படுகிறது. கழிவிரக்கம் மற்றும் உறுதி ஆகிய பலமான காற்று வீசப்பட்டு மேகங்களைச் சிதறி, ஆன்மாவை நன்றாக ஒளிர விடட்டும்.

மனத்திற்கு அதிகமாக சுதந்திரம் அளிப்பதே கட்டுண்டு இருப்பதன் முக்கிய காரணம் ஆகும். ஒரு மிருகம் ஒரு கம்பத்தில் கட்டப்பட்டு இருக்கும்போது அதனால் எங்கும் போக இயலாது. யாரிடமும் கோபம் கொள்ளவோ, ஆவேசப்படவோ, யாருக்கும் தீங்கிழைக்கவோ முடியாது. ஆனால் அதன் கட்டினை அவிழ்த்துவிட்டால் அது சுற்றித்திரிந்து, பயிர்களை அழித்து, நஷ்டம் ஏற்படுத்தி மற்றவர்களுக்கு தீங்கிழைக்கும். இவ்வாறு தொல்லை தருவதால் அதற்கு நன்றாக அடி கூட விழலாம். அதுபோலவே, மனதும் சில ஒழுங்குமுறைகள் மற்றும் எல்லைக்குள் கட்டப்பட்டு இருக்க வேண்டும். மனிதன் விதிமுறைகளுடனும் கட்டுப்பாடுகளுடனும் வாழும்வரையில் அவனால் தன் நற்பெயரைக் காப்பாற்றிக் கொண்டு, சந்தோஷமான, பயனுள்ள வாழ்க்கை வாழ முடியும். இந்த எல்லைகளைக் கடந்தால் அவன் வழி தவறிவிடுவான்.
