Detachment (vairagya) is a result of the Lord’s Grace; it needs years of yearning and struggle. Meanwhile begin today with the first step, which is cleansing of your mind and cultivation of virtues. Even if you are unable to start or follow these, at least do not laugh at those who do and discourage them. Do not depend upon others for doing your work or have someone attend to your personal wants. Do them yourself – that is the mark of being truly self-reliant and free! Never accept anything free from anyone. You must pay it back, in service or work. Thus, you will make yourselves self-respecting individuals. Receiving a favour means getting bound to the giver. Grow in self-respect and dignity. That is the best service you can do to yourself.

கடவுளின் அருளினால் வைராக்கியம் பெறப்படுகிறது; வருடக்கணக்கான விழைதலும் போராட்டமும் அதற்குத் தேவைப்படுகிறது. மனதைத் தூய்மைப்படுத்தி, நற்குணங்களை வளர்ப்பது  எனும் முதல் அடியினை இன்றே எடுத்து வையுங்கள். உங்களால் இதனைத் துவங்க முடியவில்லையென்றாலும் இதனைச் செய்யும் பிறரை ஏளனப்படுத்தாமலும் அதைரியப்படுத்தாமலுமாவது இருங்கள். உங்கள் வேலையைச் செய்வதற்கும், உங்களுக்குக்காக வேலை செய்வதற்கும் பிறரைச் சார்ந்திருக்காதீர்கள். அவற்றை நீங்களே செய்யுங்கள் – அதுவே உண்மையில் தற்சார்புடன் இருப்பதற்கும் சுதந்திரமாக இருப்பதற்கும் உண்மையான அடையாளமாகும்! யாரிடமிருந்தும் எதனையும் இலவசமாகப் பெற்றுக் கொள்ளாதீர்கள். ஒரு சேவையாலோ அல்லது ஏதோவொரு செயலாலோ நீங்கள் அவர்களுக்குத் திருப்பித் தாருங்கள். இவ்வாறு, உங்களை நீங்கள் சுயமரியாதை கொண்டவர்களாக ஆக்கிக்கொள்வீர்கள். ஒருவரிடமிருந்து ஒரு உபகாரத்தை நீங்கள் பெற்றுக்கொள்வது கொடுத்தவருடன் உங்களை கட்டுண்டிருக்கச் செய்கிறது. சுயமரியாதையையும், கண்ணியத்தையும் வளர்த்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். அதுவே நீங்கள் உங்களுக்குச் செய்து கொள்ளும் மிகவுயர்ந்த சேவையாகும்.
